During Breast Friends month Walk With Sally has been busy creating amazing new friendships, some of which have been impacted by breast cancer.  Here’s one of our latest matches…

Hannah, 15, lost her mother to cancer when she was just 13 years old.  She is experiencing those crazy teen years with a single father and her little brother Max, who is also in the Walk With Sally program.  Having been around the program for a while, Hannah is very excited to be matched with her own mentor, Wendy, and intrigued at the possibility of giving back and becoming a mentor herself when she turns 18.

Wendy, a Breast Cancer survivor herself, lost her mother to Breast Cancer when she was just 13 years old.  Just like Hannah, she was raised by a single father from that point on.

“They bonded over growing up with single fathers”

Last week, Walk With Sally brought Wendy and Hannah together for their Match Day.  They both immediately started sharing their similarities and stories of life as a young girl raised by a single father.  Immediately after the match, Wendy and Hannah went off to Starbucks to get to know each other even more.  After their match, Wendy said “Probably the thing that Hannah said that struck me the most was how hard it is to see the relationships her friends share with their moms, and how difficult it is knowing she will never have that.  I think a lot of kids really take for granted that their mom will always be there for them and really don’t have any idea what it would be like to not have that one person who uncoditionally loves and supports you like no other, gone.”

Walk With Sally will continue to try to give kids like Hannah some hope for the future through these amazing friendships.
