Adventure Plex Community Activity – May 2019

Walk With Sally hosted another successful friendship activity of 2019. Beach Cities Health District hosted us at their AdventurePlex Facility in Manhattan Beach. If you are from the South Bay you might be all too familiar with AdventurePlex, but for many of our mentees this was their first experience in the high energy indoor/outdoor play arena. Each Friendship got to participate in activities such as rock-climbing, ropes course, indoor adventure room, inflatable race course, and pickup basketball.

We set an intentional theme of for the day adventure and overcoming obstacles. The theme hit the purpose pretty much on the nose this friendship activity but oh boy! did the theme come to life. Bryan a new mentor in our program is very scared of heights but wanted to conquer his fear on the ropes course so he could share the experience with his mentee. Not only did he complete the whole course but he had a great time with his mentee, Danny.

After all of the fun activity our program was able to come together for a pizza party and conversation. It was fun seeing everyone in our program meeting new friends and getting to know other mentors and mentees in the Walk With Sally community. This is our favorite part of our community events! Often times the kids in our program feel like they are alone in what they are experiencing with their family member’s cancer journey at these events they get to meet kids who are going through the same experience and they don’t feel so alone.

When it came time to say goodbyes, the Walk With Sally team barely got everyone out the doors at 9 when the building closed. Many of our friendship had engaged in pickup basketball games and did not want to get off the court. This just goes to show how fun these events can be!
